Day 131

A childs first full day at school should be a happy calm affair, not a mad rush out of the door shouting "Just get in the car, we are late".
It was youngest's first full day at school today. I had visions of it being a nice, calm, cheerful morning, but life is never that simple. Last night, just before I went to bed, I checked my eldest's daughters school bag. I wanted to make sure there were not any notes lurking in there that I should have read.
You see she has been at her Dad's house since after school on Wednesday, and she only came back to me yesterday afternoon. I know, I know, I should have checked earlier in the day, but I didn't. When I looked I discovered she had been given two lots of homework and yes, you guessed she had only done some of it. She had already gone to bed later than I would have liked because I had cooked our food a bit late and I'd promised her she could read to me. Despite that I decided last night I would have to get her up a bit earlier in order for her to finish her homework. I also knew I would need to wash my hair before the school drop off if I wasn't going to look like Olive from On The Buses (If you remember that far back!). So I set my alarm earlier.
As it happens the girls woke up before I had chance to wake them. However youngest had been up in the night and had a "little accident" trying to get to the toilet. My partner had then been up at about four o'clock this morning. He heard a noise and then discovered he needed to turn our sons PC off, and his cupboard light. The girls had been in there and they don't think to turn anything off when they have finished. I did manage to get back off to sleep pretty quick though. Only to be woken again about 30 minutes before I needed to because the dustmen came. They always reverse their truck in. So we get woken up by the automatic voice "Warning this vehicle is reversing". Just what you need before seven in the morning! Of course I didn't get up, but drifted back off to sleep, meaning I woke with a jolt when the alarm did go off, and felt far worse than if I had just got out of bed on hearing the bin men.
When I got out of the shower my eldest daughter was complaining because she couldn't get in the bathroom when she got up. She said this whilst sat in front of her brother's PC. She was about to start Sims again. I soon put a stop to that. I told her she should have let us know she still had homework to do and she was going to have to do it this morning. She was not impressed. In fact when she opened her book and saw what she had to do she got rather upset. She was struggling to answer the questions and must have felt pressured for time. My partner and I had to juggle getting ourseves ready, persauding eldest to calm down and keeping youngest excited about her first full day at school. It was not the morning I had hoped for!
We managed it in the end though. We helped eldest through part of her work. Enough for her to show she had made an effort. We helped youngest get dressed and pick her toy to take. Also we helped me to realise that even if I think I am organised and ready, there is usually something else I haven't thought of yet!
